Background of the study
Sentence construction in Nigerian Pidgin reflects the dynamic and adaptive nature of the language, particularly among urban youth in Lagos. This study assesses how urban youth construct sentences in Nigerian Pidgin, focusing on syntactic patterns such as word order, coordination, and the use of connectors. Nigerian Pidgin, with its hybrid structure, is continually evolving as speakers negotiate influences from indigenous languages and Standard English (Okoro, 2023). Observations from social media, street interviews, and informal recordings reveal that urban youth often simplify complex sentence structures for efficiency while introducing innovative elements that reflect contemporary culture (Chima, 2024). The study uses corpus analysis and participant surveys to document these patterns, aiming to determine how sentence construction in Nigerian Pidgin facilitates effective communication in diverse social contexts. Findings will contribute to our understanding of the language’s syntactic evolution and inform educational strategies to promote effective communication among young Nigerians (Ibrahim, 2025).

Statement of the problem
Despite widespread use of Nigerian Pidgin among urban youth, systematic research on sentence construction is limited. Preliminary evidence suggests that the influence of digital communication and urban culture leads to simplified or modified sentence structures, yet detailed analysis is lacking (Okoro, 2023). This gap poses challenges for educators and language planners aiming to standardize and teach Nigerian Pidgin effectively, as evolving syntactic patterns are not well understood (Chima, 2024).

Objectives of the study:

To document sentence construction patterns in Nigerian Pidgin.

To analyze syntactic variations among urban youth.

To assess implications for language education.

Research questions:

What are the predominant sentence construction patterns?

How do urban influences affect syntactic structures?

What challenges arise in teaching these constructions?

Research Hypotheses:

Urban youth employ simplified sentence structures.

Digital media influences syntactic innovation.

Educational interventions can standardize usage.

Significance of the study (100 words):
This study is significant as it explores sentence construction in Nigerian Pidgin among urban youth, providing insights that will aid educators and policymakers in developing effective language teaching strategies. The findings will contribute to preserving the language’s dynamic character while ensuring clarity and consistency in communication (Okoro, 2023; Ibrahim, 2025).

Scope and limitations of the study:
Limited to urban youth in Lagos; excludes formal writing and other age groups.

Definitions of terms:

Sentence Construction: The arrangement of words into coherent sentences.

Nigerian Pidgin: A creole language widely used in Nigeria.

Urban Youth: Young individuals living in metropolitan areas.
